Cross and crescent moon
Milennium cross on the mount Vodno-2019

On the top of the mount Vodno( 1060 masl) in Skopje stands a metal cross of 66 meters tall. It was officially opened in 2002 to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity. By coincidence, it was installed also one year after the armed conflict that happened in the country and opposed the Albanian Muslim minority against the Macedonian army and lasted for 6 months. An agreement was signed when the rights were given and the place in the public institutions, but growing numbers of crosses and crescent moons seem to become the marking symbol of every ethnicity all over the country. Even thou church and mosques have bene present since centuries and are one of the richest heritages in North Macedonia, a new wave of religion buildings and symbols flourished in every village. It can be identified as defensive behavior of a scared population but also shows the need to mark territory in a polarized society.
