Eden na Eden

The President is a charming and expressive figure who represents her country in her own proud way. North Macedonia is still a relatively young country, where things often work in unexpected ways. The president herself has openly and candidly spoken about the realities she faces. With a sense of self-deprecation, she once joked that the government plane she uses for official trips is the smallest in the region—so small that other  balkan presidents tease her by saying she flies in something like the Wright brothers’ plane. In reality, it is a small Learjet, purchased second-hand about 25 years ago.

Today marks the seventeenth season of the talk show One to One (Еден на еден). Seven years ago, I had the chance to attend a behind-the-scenes episode featuring the two main presidential candidates at the time. Getting access was easy, as the team behind the show includes people I studied and spent a lot of time with. More importantly, I was part of the team that worked on the very first season of One to One back in 2010.

It felt special to reconnect with a show that is still alive today and continues to shape the Macedonian public sphere. During the 2019 presidential race, the winner was Stevo Pendarovski. In this photo, we see his opponent, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, dancing with the host, Zarko Dimitrievski. Although she lost that election back then, she has since 2024 become the first woman to serve as President of the Republic of North Macedonia.
